Koun Franz trained at Zuioji and Shogoji monasteries in Japan, where he lived for twelve years. From 2006 to 2010, he served as resident priest of the Anchorage Zen Community in Alaska; he has been in Halifax, Nova Scotia with Thousand Harbours Zen (formerly Zen Nova Scotia) since 2013.
